In 1933, the U.S. Mint struct 445,400 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle gold coins.
Before the coins could be released into circulation, President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered that they be melted down, with the exception of a single coin that was placed in the Smithsonian Institute.
A few coins mysteriously escaped melting, however, including one owned by Egypt’s King Farouk.
In 1995, the Farouk coin came on the open market.
Since it had been obtained legally through diplomatic channels the courts ruled that this coin could be privately owned.
The 1933 Double Eagle piece is considered America’s rarest coin.
