Description
Bast (known as "Bastet" in later times to emphasise that the "t" was to be pronounced) was one of the most popular goddesses of ancient Egypt. She is generally thought of as a cat goddess. However, she originally had the head of a lion or a desert sand-cat and it was not until the New Kingdom that she became exclusively associated with the domesticated cat. However, even then she remained true to her origins and retained her war-like aspect. She personified the playfulness, grace, affection, and cunning of a cat as well as the fierce power of a lioness. She was also worshipped all over Lower Egypt but her cult was centred on her temple at Bubastis in the eighteenth nome of Lower Egypt (which is now in ruins). Bubastis was the capital of ancient Egypt for a time during the Late Period and a number of Pharaohs included the goddess in their throne names.A very divine Papyrus that can call the forces of this feline Goddess into your home or workplace. It is framed in a beautiful monumental Golden large Shadowboxed Mount. The Picture was framed by myself and is glare proof UV resistant/blocking Glass and 21" wide and 26" tall and will be shipped in a cardboard reinforced box with the glass taped and protected. The matting is black suede and contrast nicely with the bright blue of the Cat and the 24k Gold highlights and color tile on the cats Collar and Ear. This unusual and beautiful papyrus is of the old school and done with bright lasting colors and was enhanced before framing with a fadeless clear wash.
This was purchased by the owner (myself) directly from an importer of fine Egyptian Art and Statues in 1999 and she visited Egypt herself to purchase direct from the artist. It hung in my home for many years but recently has been stored in my home and has always been taken care of. It has some signs of ageing of the Papyrus and is slightly dark stained on both sides as shown which is a natural process that occurs over time. The colors are bright and the detail remarkable.
