    Sculpture details:
In 1964, during an extensive archaeological excavation at Teotihuacan, the disc was excavated in the area directly in front of the famous Pyramid of the Sun, (the third largest pyramid in the world) by a team of astonished archaeologists. The discovery soon made international news and the sculpture was moved to the recently opened National Museum of Anthropology for public display.
Archaeologists believe that the sculpture's "halo" may refer to the sunset and sunrise, since the change from day to night was perceived by many Mesoamerican civilizations as a cycle of death and rebirth of the solar system. The symbolic meaning of the skull image itself is more difficult to identify, but it is believed that it may refer to the ritual practice of human sacrifice or be a representation of the Teotihuacan god of death, Mictlantecuhtli.
It may also be that this "disk of death" was related in some way to the human sacrifices carried out around the construction of the Pyramid of the Sun. According to the presence and location of the burial sites, it seems that the sacrifice of humans and animals was practiced during the construction of buildings. This occurred perhaps as offerings to appease the gods to ensure both material prosperity and safety from the region's frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
Sculpture with the face of death is the name that this emblematic piece of the National Museum of Anthropology of Mexico City officially receives and the inauguration of the Teotihuacán Hall of said enclosure. It was carved in andesite and decorated with red pigment, it belongs to the Classic period (1-650 AD) and its dimensions are: 126 x 102 x 25 cms. The piece is a stone disco in which a gaunt human face is represented, surrounded by a halo that could represent a folded paper. The researcher Felipe Solís Olguín was the one who suggested that he would be at the front of the pyramid.
