Description
Framed Egyptian Papyrus ArtworkI am not an art professional, but enjoy and appreciate the talent required to create beautiful objects. Each papyrus image is hand-painted and from Egypt. Both were professionally framed at a shop that closed its doors 28 years ago. So, the artwork is at least that old. I have taken the liberty of refreshing the brown paper and wire on the back and added felt pads. Each print has a blue mat and gold tone frame. One papyrus print sit atop the mat so the rough edges are visible and the other print sits beneath the mat. Lighting and glass presented a little challenge when photographing. Any variations are simply reflections. The images and mats are unfaded and uniform in color and in beautiful condition. Please view all images.
Papyrus (cyperus papyrus)
has been made the same way for approximately 4000 years. The earliest description of papyrus making comes from the Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder. His account dates to 77-79 A.D. The Egyptians made many things from papyrus reeds including rope, baskets and sandals, but the most important function was paper. In the ancient workshops the long reeds were chopped into short lengths. The green outer skin was peeled away. A workman then cut the white pith inside length ways into wafer thin slices. Two layers of pith were placed crossways on a pounding block. The workman put a cloth over pith and pounded it into sheets with a ballet to make a smooth writing surface, the sheets were finally polished with a stone.
